Arraiolos, a region with history

Monte da Ravasqueira is located in the municipality of Arraiolos, a town founded during the 2nd century BC. King Dinis ordered the castle to be built in 1310, the same king that had given this typical Alentejan settlement its first charter in 1290.

Arraiolos stands in the interior part of southern Portugal. The rural municipality has an area of 684 km2 and a population of some eight thousand. It is renowned for its natural beauty and for the pride of its people in its history and heritage.

Lying about an hour?s drive from Lisbon and about 15 minutes from Évora, a World Heritage city, Arraiolos enjoys several tourist infrastructures, with a focus on the Nossa Senhora da Assunção Pousada located in a 16th century monastery, one of the prestigious Pousadas de Portugal chain.

Of the most outstanding affirmations of Portuguese genius the famous Arraiolos carpets are among the most notable. They have been hand-woven by generations of laborious weavers who lend them the best of their good taste and art, some showing features of the life of the great Alentejan plain.
